Summary: This full-time position is responsible for assisting students and families through the financial aid and student accounts/billing process. The Student Financial Services Counselor will assist in all customer service aspects of the office. This position requires working with federal, state, and institutional financial aid resources and works within the established regulations and policies. In addition, this position oversees Student Employment processing and assists with the financial aid portion of VA enrollments in collaboration with the School Certifying Officer. This position reports to the Director of Student Financial Services. 

Note: This position is on-campus and requires regular interactions with students and families. Candidates must be comfortable working on a student-centered environment. 

This position is not exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is eligible to earn overtime pay for hours worked above 40 in a single work week. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Counsel and advise current and prospective students and their families on institutional, state, and federal student financial aid programs, private alternative funding sources, and payment plans administered by the university.
  • Provide superior customer service to students and families through email, phone, and text communications.
  • Review of daily FAFSA submissions. 
  • Processes student employment requests and hiring forms. 
  • Monitors work study funds, and reports on student employment activity as needed.
  • Collects Student Veteran benefit information and processes in the university database. 
  • Serves as the backup for the School Certifying Officer for VA.
  • Special projects and additional duties as assigned to enhance the level of service and commitment to students, their families and the University.

 Non-Essential Duties:

 Other duties and special projects may be assigned to meet department and University needs.

 Experience, Knowledge, and Skills Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree or associate degree from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of two years in customer service or related field. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to communicate with students, parents, and campus partners.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access and Outlook
  • High attention to detail.
  • Ability to work after hours and weekend events.
  • Maintaining the protection and confidentiality of student information. 

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in financial aid, student accounts, or related experience in a higher education setting.
  • Experience with Veterans Benefits or working knowledge of VA benefit categories. 
  • Hands-on experience with PowerFaids and Jenzabar or campus software systems.
